What is BIS Certification?

BIS certification is India's mandatory product conformity assessment — issued by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) to confirm that a product meets prescribed safety, quality, and performance requirements under the BIS Act, 2016. It is the primary regulatory framework governing product standards in India.

Products notified under Quality Control Orders (QCOs) must carry the BIS certification mark before they can be manufactured, imported, or sold in India. The certification is administered through multiple schemes — including ISI Mark for domestic manufacturers, FMCS for foreign manufacturers, and CRS for electronic and IT products.

With over 346 products currently under mandatory certification and new QCOs being issued regularly, BIS compliance is an expanding requirement that affects manufacturers across electrical, electronics, construction, chemicals, consumer goods, solar, and automotive sectors.
